Piano Sight Read helps you practice sight reading your piano notes on your Palm. It displays a keyboard and a staff with notes on it, challenging you to tap on the correct keys. If you always wanted to play the piano, this software teaches you how to read music. If you have taken years of piano lessons but never quite learned those pesky notes, this software makes it easy for you to master them. Practice whenever you have time; it trains your brain to read the notes faster. In no time you will sight read effortlessly.
In "Play" mode you play notes either by tapping on the keys or on the staff! "Drill" mode shows you a note on the staff for you to find the right piano key and tallies your performance. In "Test" mode, you'll have a timed test of finding and tapping on the right piano keys. Piano Sight Read keeps track of your high scores so that you see yourself improve.
Your whole family can enjoy Piano Sight Read since it tracks the practice records of eight individual users. Practice notes on the base clef, treble clef, or alternating clefs, or make your practice more challenging by varying the key signature, adding sharps or flats.
Quick Start:
Download and HotSync or beam the file PianoSightRead.prc to your Palm
OS device. Then tap on the piano icon to start the program.
On screen you'll see a staff with either a base clef or a treble clef and below it you'll see a three-octave keyboard. Depending on the clef you choose the keys to the right or to the left of the middle C are shown. A dot marks the middle C.
To change the clef: simply tap on it
To change the key signature: simply tap on the area to the right of the clef.
To select the range of notes: Move the key limiters with your stylus.
To hear the key sounds: Set Piano Sound Option to "Pref."
The volume will depend on your Palm OS preferences setting.
Play Mode: Tap on the keyboard and see its note appear on the staff and hear its sound. Or tap on the staff and see its key pressed and hear its sound. You will see the notes with accidentals appear on the staff.
In this mode key limiters have no effect. There is nothing recorded and no score is kept. Use this mode to familiarize yourself with various keys, or to play a fun tune!
Drill Mode: Practice sight reading by tapping on the correct key corresponding to the note shown. Select the clef, the key signature, and the range of notes you wish to practice. This way you can build your sight reading skill for the unfamiliar top or bottom ranges of notes.
Drill mode Tallies the number of notes you have correctly tapped as well as the number of your errors. The percentage of correct notes is also shown. You can clear this tally by simply changing modes.
Test Mode: Take a timed test to assess your sight reading and to monitor your progress. Once in Test mode, start your one-minute test by tapping on the Start button (Options button is disabled in Test mode.) Once your test starts, a thin shrinking line just above the keyboard indicates the time left. During the test try to tap as many correct notes as you can.
For each correct note you gain a score proportional to the range of the notes you have selected and the key signature. But for each incorrect note your score will be reduced by the same amount.
At the conclusion of the test, your score will be compared to your top ten score so far. If you qualify, your score will be included in your high score list.
High Score List: Piano Sight Read keeps the top ten high scores of each of your users. The most recent score admitted to the high score list is shown in bold. The dates for the scores are also recorded and shown.
You will be able to easily monitor your progress and see yourself improve. Competing with your self and beating your best score is the best motivation to excel.
Each user will have three high score lists, one
for each clef category. Tap on "Erase All" to erase all the
scores for the current user and for the current category.
Options:
Key Signature: Change your key signature here. You can also tap and drag on the key signature area on the staff to change the key signature quickly. Dragging in any one of 12 circle-of-fifth directions sets the key signature to that key.
Sound Volume: Control the sound either locally or based on your (Palm OS's) Prefs selection. When set to "Prefs" change Palm OS's Preference setting for Game Sound to control the sound volume. When set to "Local" tap on the right side of the keyboard to change the sound volume locally.
Current User: Select one of eight users. This allows you to keep track of the high scores of up to eight individual users. Also, when you switch from one user to another, their choices (key limits, clef, key signature, etc.) will be recalled as well. You can edit and include the names of the actual users here. Check the box to show the user name on the main page.
Beam To Others: Tap on this button to beam Piano Sight Read to other Palm owners.
Show User Name On Page: Check this box to show the name of the user on the main keyboard page.
Show Note Name: Check this box to show the name of the note being played or displayed
Alternate Clefs: check this box to alternate between base and treble clef in drill or test mode. This allows a more challenging drill and test; after each single note, the clef alternates, encouraging you to read both clefs.
