Use this version of MessagEase™ (Single Finger MessagEase) to enter full text using only a finger! No stylus is needed.

Single Finger MessagEase is a special implementation of MessagEase that allows you to enter Full text (including all special characters) using only a finger. It runs on all Sony Cliés with virtual Graffiti (NR, NX, and NZ series), and it is free.

Install and run it like any Palm application. (double click on the SingleFingerME.prc file which puts this up on your HotSync list and HotSync your Clié. Then tap on its icon on your clie.

MessagEase is an innovative text entry technology for PDAs which is easy to learn and use, yet powerful for entering all letters, numbers and characters that are found on a regular computer keyboard. With MessagEase you don't need to carry an extra keyboard and you can always enter data quickly and accurately. Although it may look strange to you at first, with a bit of practice, you can enter full text much faster than you do with Graffiti.

With MessagEase you essentially use only nine buttons to enter ALL characters. These buttons are bigger and easier to find and tap. Since the letters are frequency based, most of the time (71%) you tap on one of these big keys. Since your targets are bigger and your finger movements are optimized, you enter text much faster than any other one-finger or stylus-based entry system, guaranteed!

  • Enter all letters with a tap or a drag of a single finger.
  • Enter more than 37 characters with a single drag of a finger.
  • Save your frequently used text of any length in more than 200 imbedded clipboards.
  • Store and recall shortcuts inside your saved texts to be expanded upon recall.
  • Have all the commonly used editing functions (Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Select-All) at your fingertip! Literally!

There are three other implementations of MessagEase for Palm OS:

  1. MessagEase application, which includes a training game and Japanese Katakana.
  2. MessagEaseST (stamp) which is a true replacement for Graffiti, supports a thin overlay (stamp) placed over your Graffiti area, transforming it into a powerful text entry system.
  3. The keyboard extension (MessagEaseKB) also available complete and free of charge from our website.

Summary of the features:
Tap on the keys to enter the big (most frequent) letters; drag on each key toward one of 8 principle directions to enter a letter (or a character).

Drag up on the spacebar to toggle to busy keyboard, to see all the special characters available.

Tap on the spacebar to enter a space; drag down on it to enter a linefeed.
Tap on the backspace button (left arrow) to backspace. Drag right on it to delete right.
Drag up on "R" to change to "Shift" or "Caps Lock" mode; drag down on R to make it lowercase. (Starting with version 1.5, when you change the case, the screen characters also change and reflect this case change.)

You can also draw a circle _starting_ on and returning to a button to enter the capital form of its main letter; drag and return to enter the capital form of the less frequent letters.
Tap on the "123" key to change it to the numeric keyboard. Tap on it again to change back to alpha keyboard.

Tap on the "Home" to leave this keyboard and go back to Launcher.

Memory capability: you can store about 180 text strings of any length in locations addressable by characters. To save a string: enter it and highlight it. Then enter "memory" command TWICE (Tap on the command key (M) twice) then tap or drag on the desired address. To recall the text you saved, enter the memory command once (tap on the command key (M)) followed by the character address you entered when you saved it. You can also save your strings on the star locations (there are 19 Memory locations there!) the usual way, and you will be able to recall them directly, without a memory recall prefix.
Insert Time and Date: You can insert time or date into your text by recalling memories in locations "t" or "d", respectively. Scrolling: you can use palm's up/down button to scroll your text.

The command button includes the most common editing functions you'll need. You can copy, past, cut and undo by just performing a drag. Dragging on the up or down arrow scrolls your text up or down. You can drag to enter a command or a shortcut symbol.
Automatic copy to Clipboard: on exiting MessagEase, the content of its buffer, or what you highlight is automatically copied to the clipboard, making cutting and pasting text easier.

Shortcut: you can enter the Palm shortcut character by dragging up on the key marked with "A". This way you can use Palm's shortcut facility to assign a few letters to a phrase or paragraph for quick recall. For example: <shortcut>ds expands into the current date stamp (subject to the format you define in your Prefs program). Likewise <shortcut>ts expands into the current time stamp.

You can even specify a shortcut sequence inside your saved memories. For example you can save the phrase: "Today's date is <shortcut>ds." at any of more than 180 memory locations or one of 19 immediate memory locations (star button). then when you recall that memory this phrase will turn into "Today's date is 3/12/03." To prevent MessagEase from immediately expanding whatyou are specifying for a memory save, backspace on the character immediately following the <shortcut> symbol once and then re-enter it. You can also specify two consecutive <shortcut> characters and then erase one before saving it. For your convenience the following memories are preloaded: recall-t gives you the
current time; recall-d gives you the current date; and recall-x gives you the current time and date.

Automatic capitalization.
changing case with Graffiti commands as well.
Menu: Tap on the menu bar to bring up the menu. You'll have common editing functions available to you there in addition you can change the font size using its font selection.

MessagEase's technology works with anything that has a keypad. It supports full text (not just letters, but all special characters like @, %, ?, æ ™, ®, ©, ê, Ø, & ™). It revolutionizes text entry on cell-phones, remote controllers, wearable computers, car navigation systems, Palm PDAs & any device needing fast, compact, accurate & full text input system.
In addition to numbers & capital/ lowercase letters, you can enter another 150 special characters using MessagEase's Combine Key (drag left up from key A/1 ) by combining two common characters. Please see the ReadMe file for the list of all special characters available. You can enter up to 7000 other characters using the same easy technique (Think Kanji!).
